OK, you did say *maybe*, but come on, does it really speak to anything
besides a. their disposable income, or b. the policies of previous
employers to foot the bill?
We all seem to agree to certain degrees that STC membership doesn't
have any inate properties in itself. Both bad and good tech writers can
be STC members (or not members).
What I have learned on this list is that STC is what you make of it.
What I have also learned on this list, and from other tech writers who
have been members, is that it is not invaluable, i.e. I can live a
full, happy, productive life as a tech writer without it. I can be very
focused on tech writing, and learn all kinds of valuable things without
STC, I can also "add to the profession" w/out using STC as an avenue.
Then again some of my best TW firends are STC members<g>.
OTOH, I hope I don't run in to many folks that discount non-STC
members, since my company's pre-christmass gift was a severance
package.
