Leif Erickson says...

Go to www.frameusers.com <http://www.frameusers.com> and check the tools section. There is a tool by =
CUD (Chris D.) that can search across a book and replace references for =
you. It works a lot like IXGen in that regard. Chris' Booklooker tool is =
exactly what you want and is easy to use. (It also can change other =
types of references, too!)

However, I don't know that know that you *really* need to replace your =
bitmaps with PNGs or Gifs. Have you considered tweaking your compression =
settings in Distiller? I'd look there before I batch converted all of =
the images and changed their references in FrameMaker.

I appreciate the good word for my tools, but unfortunately this particular claim is too ambitious. My BookLooker tool just *searches* - it does not replace. Also, it does not search for graphics imported by reference. However, I'm sure (for future reference, and for those who don't like to play with MIF) that there are other shareware or freeware tools to handle just this situation. (If not, there should be.)

However, MIF is indeed the way to go. I would use something other than Notepad, though - a MIF file can be *realy* big.
