Sorry, I might need to make a few clarifications here. Firstly, I am not
American. I'm Franco-British. Secondly, I work and have worked in Europe for
the last ten years. Thirdly, my "wife" is not in the diplomatic service.
Finally, I cannot count on the company to help in any way in finding a job
for me. We could all live off the one salary (which is big enough to make
going worth it anyway). I just think that eight months of winter twiddling
my thumbs might send me to the vodka bottle and more importantly hinder my
chances of finding a job when we come back to the West. Three years off a CV
might read for the ladies (and I mean them no offense) but attitudes to men
following the major breadwinner still don't wash with most companies. I'd
just really like to have a clear idea in my head of what's going to happen
before I pack.
Otherwise, Annamaria, pre-applying is a good idea. Do you think I could
include terroristphobic American companies anyway?
Harry,

You might try getting a list of American companies/subsids in the region
and pre-applying here in the states. There are several circumstances where
an American company would prefer a US citizen writer over a foreign
national, especially where English is the written language, or the
technology area is "sensitive". In addition, you may be able to leverage
your wife's position as an asset to the company. Given the patriotic
fervor and terroristphobia (I just made that one up!) right now, many
companies would opt to employ the spouse of a foreign service officer
"in-country" over any other candidate.
