Christine, if you've been editing PDFs in TextPad, saving the files again, and ending up with undamaged PDFs that open properly then you've been amazingly lucky. PDFs have a checksum that means editing usually results in a damaged-beyond-repair file. Acrobat 5 may have changed this checksum calculation so that the path editing you've been doing is no longer possible.

You might be able to find a link-editing tool on the PlanetPDF or PDFzone sites http://www.planetpdf.com or http://www.pdfzone.com

If you're editing a doc set and have to adjust links after the PDFs are made, have you considered changing your authoring tool to something like Adobe FrameMaker? FM and Acrobat are exceptionally well integrated and FM can make/manage hyperlinks and cross-references very reliably.

Sheila
