Work somewhere with tight deadlines and poor inter-group communication
:-) ??

Seriously, I think it's a matter of asking the RIGHT question(s) and
that means doing a little research first:

what do I want to know - facts? opinions? etc
what do I already know?
have I checked the archives?
checked the web?

If you do this first then a few things happen:

you generally get a better response from the list/SMEs etc as
they see you've done your homework first
it can highlight stuff you didn't know you knew, even that the
original question you were going to ask was the wrong one
you can find out yourself and can then feel suitably self
satisfied!
