John and Julie: It depends on at least three things: (a) the academic
discipline one wishes to teach, (b) the state's requirements for a
discipline, and (C) when one started teaching and when the requirements were
revised.

For example, to teach a foreign language, the majority of U.S. community
colleges require an M.A. I was an adjunct professor in California, and I
needed my M.A. to teach a foreign language.

Julie, you may be able to find the requirements on the Internet. Look up
your favorite college's district's official Web site, and scan the pages. If
the district didn't publish the information you need, give them a call. The
phone number definitely will be on a Web page somewhere.

Good luck!

Jenise

Julie,

I must have missed the original posting ... I have been teaching tech
writing at local colleges and universities since the early 80s, and all I
possess is a BA. I don't think a Master's degree is required to be an
adjunct professor.
