Indeed. Better said might be "if only realism prevailed at my workplace!"
Or possibly just respect for the tech writing profession.
Andrew's percentages sound about right to me. Writing is supposed to be the
easy part--understanding the product is the requirement that leads to making
the writing useful to the customer, right? It's easy to comprehend a need
to "hit the ground running," but that's supposed to be the writing part and
it just won't happen efficiently if it's the product knowledge part and you
don't already have it ... unless, of course, the SME is writing the rough
draft or you are just translating an existing engineering spec into
something user friendly, which is the same thing.
