TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I am a Wonder Years kid and I have lived through booms and
recessions. During the '80s I worked in the NYC financial
district (think 'Bonfire of the Vanities'), and at the turn of
the century I worked in the dot-com economy through the
boom-and-bust. Somehow I always ended up embedded in these
really cool economic phenomena, like some kind of tech-writing
Forrest Gump.
Now I smell a boom coming again, but for all the wrong reasons.
<long quasi-political explanation deleted>
I'm expecting a short boom featuring mergers and LBOs, not
technology startups. As an IT tech writer, that means relatively
few software development projects for me. I hope I'm wrong.
I'm a pragmatist though, and I'll take any boom I can get.
Regards,
Mike O.
