The doc plan is your contract, and not producing one is tantamount to doing work under the table. Where will you be when the one chapter turns into five new chapters, and the project manager wants to know why you're so slow? But there are doc plans and there are doc plans. I have written 50-page doc plans, for a 15,000-page doc set. I have also written a short e-mail message as a "doc plan" for a small, fast-turnaround project. Hopefully you have the same flexibility, but I think every project should have a plan of record, even a one-chapter change."

Thank you for your advice. You make a great point about a doc plan being a type of contract. In that case, it would be necessary, even if you change one word.
