Well, as you said, nothing beats real life experience.

However, whether a book can replace a course depends on the person. For a person without the self-discipline, taking the course can provide the necessary discipline to study the material. But a self-disciplined person can follow a self-study guide and get the same results, especially since many courses - at least at the university where I took some night school courses - simply lead the class through self-study guides.

In fact, people can even study a tool without a guide. For example, in a burst of self-application never seen in me before or since, I taught myself FrameMaker by doing a couple of makeovers. When I eventually dared to compare my expertise to other people's, I found my knowledge competent, but idiosyncratic in one or two ways; some of my ways of doing things weren't as useful as other people's, but some were easier and more efficient (at least for me).
