Thanks to everyone who replied, especially to the two people who waded through my confusted long email, and to Daniel Bleil, who provided the nifty user/reference example, which I'll keep on file for department use. Also, I have been able to compose a more coherent "explanation" of each type of guide, thanks to the responses.

I appreciate your taking the time to help me.
