chapter of the STC (Canada West Coast). I'm wondering if a workshop on
production cycles would be valuable, and if so, what a workshop like that
should cover."

If a lot of the jobs in your area involve software development, it would
probably be well-received. You could have someone familiar with how such
cycles are supposed to work in theory (such as an experienced development
manager from a large company in the area, a professor in a local computer
science program, or a consultant from a local firm specializing in this
area) give an overview of the purpose and functions of a well-designed
product cycle. Then complete the program with a panel discussion of STC
members who work in different software companies describing how such cycles
are applied, and what it means for them and the documentation deadlines,
etc. For newbies, the theoretical framework will help in understanding the
subsequent discussion of what works or doesn't work in the real development
environment.
I worked in one company where one division applied a well-structured and
well-documented development methodolgy, and another division (in the same
company) vigorously avoided it. The difference was like night and day.
