Wow - THAT is a bit of a sweeping generalization. In heavily unionized
state like Illinios, where I grew up, you HAD to be in a union to do all
kinds of jobs, ranging from grocery store meatcutters to musicians in the
city's marching band. Not a lot of organized crime there!

But I think it is true - as several on the list have pointed out - that
unions usually come into existence to combat unfair treatment of workers.
And other than the militant FrameMaker advocates who feel that being
forced to use Word is a form of cruel and unusual punishment, I think most
US-based tech writers cannot say that we're being treated or compensated
too badly.
