Tina,
While working at an advertising agency, one of the principals put a gopher on proofreading. His name was Ray and he spoke 4 or 5 languages (not uncommon here in Montreal). I was put-out and felt threatened. To make a long story short, nothing got by him. He earned the nickname of "Surgical Ray" because of his precision. He turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to us. I still miss his work and call him occasionally to ask him about some turn of phrase regarding its ease of translation or interpretation.
Although Ray had intuitive ability to spot irregularities, he didn't know about standard proofreading marks or correct techniques for using them. Armed with these and a sharp blue pencil, much effort can be saved and confusion avoided during markup and correction.
