Debra Pesach wonders: <<I have a numbered heading system (1., 1.1, 1.1.1,
etc.) and the powers that be want the text for the heading to be right
aligned [with the number left aligned].>>

There's a good general solution for this problem that works in pretty much
any software: define the heading style so that it includes a right-aligned
tab stop at the right margin (given the existing margin settings for the
document as a whole, this should be easy to calculate*). Then, when you
actually type the heading, simply insert a tab after the heading's number.
To accomplish this in Word, position the cursor in the heading (assuming
you've already applied the Heading X style**), open the Format menu, choose
Style, then click the Modify button. Choose Tabs from the popup menu, and
fill in the resulting dialog box with all the necessary specs for the
desired tab stop.

* For example, on an 8.5-inch-wide page with a 1-inch right margin, the tab
stop would be at 8.5 - 1 = 7.5 inches.
** If not, you can select the style you want to modify or create a wholly
new style directly within the Styles dialog box.
