RE: Layoff logistics and etiquette
What rights? You have the right to quit, they have the right to fire you. Them's your rights. ;-)
I was at one time required by labor legislation that an employer was required to give you one pay period notice and also give you "just cause" for termination of employment. You, as the employee, were also required to give two weeks notice before leaving employment.
I was trying to determine which of these rights is no longer applicable under this so-called "at-will" legislation. ie right to fire without notice, right to quit without notice, etc, any other changes that might be applicable to us ordinary working stiffs.
Apparently from the thread, it sounds like the "at will" legislation only applies to the requirement to give "just cause." It is still? a requirement to give pay in lieu of notice? Will that be next?
I am a little concerned with this tone that as a worker it is understandable that you don't have any/many/what rights. Are we going to return to the days when the only people with the rights are the employers? Or is this discussion already over?
Not to be inflammatory, but inquiring minds...
Also I have heard mentioned recently a term "free-work" state. As in Texas.
Must have missed the news on more than one hot-news day.
