I went through a layoff once. I found out a couple of days later that I was
being replaced by a guy I had referred to the company for a job.

As soon as I heard this, I called HR and asked if I would be getting my
"finder's fee" -- a couple hundred bucks that they promised to anyone who
referred a successful candidate. I was told, sorry, that program is only for
employees. Since I didn't work there anymore I didn't qualify. They told me,
"It just wouldn't be fair to the others."

I guess the moral is, don't refer people who are qualified to do your job...
