If you import by reference:

* you can maintain a single copy of the graphic and
import into multiple FrameMaker files
* you can maintain a central repository of graphics
separate from the FrameMaker documents
* you can update graphics with new ones without doing
anything in the Frame document (assuming the graphic
is the same format)
* I believe it minimizes the size of the FrameMaker
files
