Sounds like they're thinking about single-sourcing very early on. If so,
they're ahead of most of the pack.

We're thinking along those lines, too. But being a megacompany, the powers
that be have formed "tiger teams" [Don't jump on that one, folks; I'm only
the messenger!] to address the perceived issues. Your company should be able
to move faster, but do put a fair bit of time into planning.

See the Proceedings (online) of the 2001 STC Annual Conference (at
www.stc.org, under either "Education" or "Conferences," I forget which) for
a lot of jump-start articles and think about joining the STC single-sourcing
SIG, for a start. Also check out the websites for various tools vendors,
such as AuthorIT and XMeTaL, for demo versions you can download and play
with.

Both JoAnn Hackos and Anne Rockley are doing a lot of good work in this
area, too. The Rockley Group, in particular, has a lot of significant
projects under its collective belt. Check out what they have to say.

Good luck with your project!
Marguerite
