Disclaimer: I rarely know what I'm talking about.

Suggestion #1: In our IT dept., a .DAT file is kind of like a mainframe text
file. However, these I can open with Notepad. Sometimes it's gibberish,
but I can open it.

Suggestion #2: I think MicroFocus COBOL had an input file system where
programs actually read 2 files - an index (.idx) and a data (.dat) file.
Could it be this sort of file?

Not much, I know, but I HTH!
