Unless you move to a low cost region and take a pay
cut. Does that mean you are then x% worse? Or does it
mean that your perceived value is tied to such
unrelated factors? Perhaps the wrong can of worms to
open?

Seriously, John makes a good point. What is "better"?
Does it mean improvement in your command of English
teacher-mandated grammatical rules? Does it mean
improvement in your knowledge of that which you
document? Or in the tools you use? Or in your
paycheck? All the above?

I'm going to take a risk with this thought, but
technical writing is not the end-all of what defines
us. What I mean is that when you boil what we do down
to a stock, our command of grammar, language, tools,
or any other things we use to do what we do doesn't
mean squat. What matters is that we communicate
information to those who need it.

So, does an increased mastery of language or tools
make you a better technical writer? No. Does it help?
Yes.

I think I'm going to regret this post.
