LOL! You have to let them hold the flashlight sometimes! That's how I learned most of what I know, though I haven't tackled changing an electrical outlet or light fixture. But I can do basic plumbing, re-glaze a window, and lay a patio!


Think we didn't try? <grin> These kids were crazy about Lego when they were little, too. Somehow that hasn't translated into things like KNOWING which way to turn a light bulb to remove it, or how to re-align a dresser drawer that has slid off its moorings.

Weird. Really, really weird. I'll never forget getting into real trouble when I took an antique pocket watch apart when I was about 6. I HAD to see how it worked! I managed to find all the little gears and screws when the spring went SPROING, but I couldn't get it back together.

Almost flunked Home Ec in junior high, too -- spent more time taking the sewing machines apart and getting them to run better than sewing my projects. I still don't sew anything more complicated than straight lines.

But I can replace a water pump or a carburetor, assemble furniture that arrives disassembled in a box, and install a new hard drive. (Here's the tie-in to technical writing:) As long as it comes with instructions, I can do anything.

Even cook.
