TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.

First, get your writer to subscribe to this list. At least he or she will
have lots of shoulders to cry on.
Does the product have clear written requirements? If not, this is a place
to start. I have been know to write my own requirements (what I THINK the
product should do), then run it past the SME's. If the requirements are
wrong, the SME's will get very upset and say, "No, you have it all wrong!" I
get lots of good information for this :)
If the writer is not included in functionality meetings, have him or her
invite themselves. Is there a room where these meetings are generally held?
If people seem to gravitate towards this room, the writer can grab a pad and
pencil (I actually use a laptop) and slip into the back of the room. After
a few visits, the team should realize that the writer is doing good for
them.
Hope this helps.
