In a meeting with my boss today, he asked if I would take over the basic
graphics duties since we no longer have a graphic artist. I am a lone
writer due to the layoffs a couple of months ago. During the meeting,
we agreed to certain expectations. I would be responsible for creating
simple graphics (web buttons and menu bars), cleaning up customer logos
for use in the applications, and formatting whatever graphics I need for
documentation. My boss is willing to pay up to $1000.00 for Photoshop
classes. Photoshop is the tool that the company owns although I do
have a copy of Dreamweaver at home for my personal use.
1. Has anyone taken Photoshop classes in the NOVA or DC Metro area? I
have a list of five or six companies but no personal recommendations.
2. Are there any books I could get that cover basic graphical design? I
am looking for a source that will help with determining what graphic
format to use with certain situations. Unfortunately, my knowledge of
graphics is pretty limited.
3. Are there any pitfalls in this situation? During the meeting, we
did discuss additional compensation for the added responsibilities. He
also agreed that the company should look for a contract graphics artist
to handle complex problems or to pick up the work if I were swamped with
documentation.
