In a stock option compensated company, you do get a culture of ownership. I
owned my piece of the world.
Of course, that culture of ownership is part illusion. Many options come hedged with restrictions. In many cases, you don't get all of them at once, so that the company can make you stick around longer. Few issued to employees include any voting rights, and it's fairly common for sales to be subject to the approval of the company's officers - otherwise, as soon as everyone got control of their stocks, there would be a massive sale of company stock, and the overall price would pancake like a hydroplane suddenly running out of power.
But, so long as employees believe in the illusion, many of them will work free over time. They won't stop to consider that the options they get in return are far less than they'd get if they were paid an hourly wage.
In short, stock options rarely mean an co-operative. They're not quite what Proudhon, Bakunin, and other anarchists had in mind.
