You have described the steps to gather the info already. Good thinking.
Maybe I'm missing something in what the product is doing, but why is
the engineer changing the commands all the time. Don't any stay the
same? Are the changes because he just changes them? Perhaps the real
problem is that the engineer, doesn't have any guidelines about
consistency or conformity to existing product?
This is of course a matter for the management team.
