Gang,
I started blocking discussions of the 21kb executable
as discussions of viruses aren't appropriate for
TECHWR-L.
I've been informed, offline, that some seem to suspect
a malicious attack on members of this list.
Frankly, I find that less than credible. It's entirely
possible that some members of this list have computers
with viruses--that's probably a certainty, actually.
It's also quite possible that this virus lifts email
addresses from inboxes (Outlook, I suspect) and mails
itself to those addresses. Welcome to life on the Internet,
ca 2001.
You should 1) never open an unexpected attachment,
2) use a virus scanner regularly, 3) consider not
using email programs that readily propagate viruses.
No attachments are allowed out to TECHWR-L, so viruses
cannot spread by that vector. If a virus is sent to
you directly, please deal with it--there's nothing else
to be done.
This isn't appropriate for discussion on TECHWR-L.
Direct comments to me offline. And please, don't
ascribe to malice that which can be adequately
explained by [careless behavior|stupidity|etc.]--
it's far more plausible that one of 5000 subscribers
has a virus than to think that someone is attempting
to "attack" members of this list.
