The reason every machine gets hacked has little or nothing to do with what's
on the machine. Even a machine with nothing on it can be used to launch
coordinated distributed attacks on other machines. Your machine can be used
for such purposed without you even being aware it is happening until the FBI
comes by and confiscates the machine. Of course, a good hacker will erase
their presence from your machine. So who knows how many machines you
attempted to hack last night.

The computer security industry isn't concerned about the value of the home
computer's content. Most of them consider the home market to not be worth
their time. Luckily, some other companies are happy to take $30 or so for
every computer tied to a DSL account. The phone companies seem to think that
that market is large enough for them.
