For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Actually, getting CYA is bad advice. If you need CYA, then work elsewhere.
We have tons of CYA systems. They take up so much time and effort that the
clients that send the writer's work have elected to make formal publication
processes optional. The entire department is on the line, because they seek
safety is what they perceive to be an unsafe environment. The processes have
taken priority over content.
I've never worked anywhere where CYA is needed. Yes, there has been fear,
but that was due to the irrational, who never listen to the CYA evidence.
Work is not about facts. Its about emotions. If someone wants you gone, you
will go regardless of the paperwork. And, if that paperwork takes too long
to create, fear works faster.
