Annika Hohenthal reports: <<My colleague insists that you can only use the
word 'system' when you refer to really large and complicated systems, not
when you talk about perhaps somewhat smaller systems...>>

In the abstract sense, a "system" refers to any collection of two or more
components and the relationships between them; in the physical sense,
"system" refers to the packaging of those components (e.g., a TV system). In
both cases, the components and their relationships must be distinguishable
as a single unit (a "whole"). Nowhere in this definition is there any
requirement for a minimum level of complexity, which is why scientists speak
of simple and complex systems: both are possible.

"The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that
English is about as pure as a cribhouse [We're Happily Overcoming Repulsive
E-mailfiltering]. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has
pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle
their pockets for new vocabulary."-- James D. Nicoll
