IOWs, up-front, partial payments are SOP in many, if not most, contractual
situations these days.

Yes, and it also depends on the work arrangement. If I'm working on an hourly basis and the client wants an invoice every two weeks, an up-front payment is generally unnecessary.

If I've bid a flat rate, I'll request a percentage (from 5-20%, depending) as a retainer. I bill the remainder in chunks: first/second/third review deliverable, final review, delivery of source and finished product, whatever.

Finally, initial payment may depend on my past experience with a client. A client who has a well-practiced work process and payment schedule is not a concern. I tend to require initial payment from any client who slips their own schedules, takes their sweet time to look at reviews, etc. Cash flow is always a problem in this business. Why should work I've completed in good faith be held hostage to a client's inability to stick to a development schedule? (Or inability to produce a schedule???)
