Hi Scot & all on list,
I just happened to spot this download on the Adobe site whilst I was looking
for something else.
>This update corrects a problem in which Adobe FrameMaker 5.x does not
display ZapfDingbats characters correctly when used with Adobe Type Manager
Deluxe 4.0 and Windows NT 4.0. Text to which you've applied the ZapfDingbats
font prints correctly from FrameMaker 5.x, although it does not appear
correctly on-screen. When the update is installed, FrameMaker 5.x displays
and prints text to which you've applied the ZapfDingbats font as expected.
>NOTE: If you do not need ZapfDingbats to appear correctly on-screen in
FrameMaker, do not install this update; it may cause problems with the
ZapfDingbats font in other applications.

I'm not sure if this will sort out your problem but it's there if you need
it.
As an extra note, I recently had a similar problem of missing characters
which was cured after following suggestions from list members. -- I was
using Acrobat 3.1. After updating the software to the latest revision 3.1??
and adding some extra memory to the original 64MB the problem ceased.
