Bruce, will all due respect, the fact that it *should* happen this way doesn't mean it *does* happen, and the fact that you have never been rejected for lack of the appropriate title (not that you know of, we might add) doesn't negate the experience of others who *have*. We can talk about how it should work until we're blue in the face, but few things in the real world always turn out the way they should.
True, I don't know whether the lack of a high-sounding title has cost me a job or not. And I can see that someone might feel that the title is an extra precaution - just as listing your duties is a precaution. However, unless I've missed something, I haven't seen heard any definite proof that the title has helped - just that people assume it would help.
Maybe other people who hire could address this point. As I mentioned in another e-mail, I doubt that a senior title has much affect. I know I haven't been helped much about it when I've been sorting through resumes, but maybe I'm a minority.
