Who ever said that a company is supposed to look out for the interests of
its employees? A company exists to look out for the interests of its
owner(s).
Keeping the workforce happy and productive is an important part of reaching
that goal, but it is not the company's real goal. A company that does not
worry about its bottom line will soon find its employees worrying in the
unemployment line. Look at how many of the dot.bombs had wildly liberal
fringe bennies and managed to run their businesses into the ground.
In these economic times there is probably a pretty good reason for the offer
be retracted. How long ago was it made? How was the company doing
financial at that time? Now? If they made the offer in good faith, but it
would not jeopardize the company's future (and your own future employment by
extension) to give you the raise you have to understand that they cannot
wreck the company just to keep a promise to an employee.
If the new work really bothers you, negotiate those tasks with your boss.
BTW, some people take new tasks, at the same pay, just to be doing something
different and more interesting.
