Subject:GAK!: how about SME From:"Swallow, William" <WSwallow -at- courion -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Thu, 2 Aug 2001 10:07:18 -0400
>>>>I've been wondering about SME. I always pronounced it as initials, but
at this job, someone insists it's pronounced "smee." So what's the
opinion of other tech writers?<<<<
My opinion? My opinion is that it really doesn't matter one bit.
smee vs. ess-em-ee-ee, to-mA-to vs. to-mah-to... is it really such a big
issue to discuss it for days on this list?
A SME is a SME no matter how it's pronounced, just as a car is a car whether
you live in Nevada, New England, or London. Same goes for other
acronyms/initialisms/intellectual brainfarts. Use it consistently, define it
if necessary, and no one will really care. Likewise with a/an and the many
other more trivial issues we repeatedly beat to death every few weeks.
If this really is such a big issue, why doesn't someone take the initiative
to do the research and write a white paper.
Sorry to be so negative, but this stuff is really starting to irritate me. I
know I could use the "delete key", so please don't suggest it. The delete
key doesn't change the fact that there is something obviously seriously
wrong with our profession's priorities.
