Another midwesterner chiming in...
I've heard it a number of times as three distinct letters, though more commonly as one word. Unlike Steven though, the only people I know who say it with three letters are those who are sort of old timers on the Internet. I think it's a little like U-R-L vs. "earl" and "lynne-ix" vs. "line-is"--that is we all have an opinion and there's usually one more opinion than we have people! :)
