I think I disagree, Bill. Gaining technical knowledge does not necessarily
mean we lose the perspective crucial to our jobs. I mean, it's not an
inevitable process.

If we lose the user perspective, we let this happen, it's our fault. It's
not an excuse for ignoring the technical nitty gritty.

(Note: I deal with this every day. My company develops a database engine.
We do extremely complicated database development products geared for
software engineers, and we also do custom data analysis products for
analysts who may or may not have any computer experience. I move between
whole sets of terminology, different graphics, different explanations,
different style guides. Both types of writing are difficult in their own
ways.)
