Sitting and waiting aren't necessarily personification. But, I'd say
something like the program "pauses" until the next active result....

What I would try to do is to avoid personification, but to still convey to
the user that they may have to wait a few seconds or minutes. "Polls"
doesn't give the user any idea of how long it will take before something
happens. Pick a verb that people understand and represents what they will
experience, not necessarily what goes on behind the scenes.
