Thank you for posting that list of techniques, Geoff! I was just about to
send mine when yours arrived. We match, point for point.

For anyone interested in exploring this topic further, the best reference
books I have found are:

Guidelines for Bias-Free Writing
by Marilyn Schwartz
</exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=books&field-author=Schwartz%2C%20Maril
yn/104-3113508-8679151>

The Bias-Free Word Finder : A Dictionary of Nondiscriminatory Language
by Rosalie Maggio
</exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=books&field-author=Maggio%2C%20Rosalie
/104-3113508-8679151>

The latter is out of print; however, Amazon has used copies available.
Rosalie Maggio makes her points strongly but not shrilly, and leavens them
with humor. She's included some priceless essays in the appendices,
including one hilarious (and provocative) commentary by Dorothy L. Sayers.

Thanks,
Phila
