Hi Linda,

I think that it's based on the "common sense" idea that making your boss
look good is good for your career / position. Of course, this assumes that
when your boss looks good, he passes on some of the "glory" to the team
members who made him or her look good. I don't think that this is
necessarily always the case, and I think that making your boss look
good -without getting any credit for yourself- might be a bad idea.

I usually think of this stated as a negative: (Part of) my job is not to
make my boss look bad. That gives a clearer picture of my real
responsibilities: doing professional work, making accurate estimates of
time/resources needed for projects, communicating issues in a timely
fashion, avoiding surprises (whenever possible), smoothing out and working
around problems... If I can do that, my boss won't look bad, and I'm more
likely to stay gainfully employed.

Really, I make my boss look good by doing my job - creating good
documentation with limited resources. That's my real job - making my manager
look good (and my dept., for that matter) is merely a byproduct.

My .02

Dan
