here's my 2 cents:

get a mentor. find someone who knows the ins and outs of the technical
area you want to work in, and make sure that person is willing to share
their knowledge and experience with you. if you can find a good mentor,
it will help you tremendously. at least, i sure wish i'd had one. i
started fresh out of school with the crappiest boss on the planet who
totally held me (and others) back. i am *still* trying to catch up. a
lousy boss can be a tremendous hindrance. and land someplace where jobs
are abundant. that way, if you DO end up with a crappy boss, you can go
work somewhere else without being stuck in a lousy job.
