Hi Dan:

I don't consider those kinds of books "user documentation" in the context of profit centers...they are designed more to compete with the 3rd party documentation that's out there. BUT I do agree that such...I don't know what you'd call them...market-segment books...could constitute a profit center in the "non-traditional" sense. Not only does Adobe do it, but so does Microsoft, Intel and Motorola to name a few companies.

I also agree with Connie's assertion that certain markets can charge for custome user docs (she mentions ecommerce), and in fact when I worked at an eCommerce startup, we did charge a custom price for the application, which included (not priced separately) a set of customized documentation.
