I agree here. A former employer was a service-based organization. We created customized products for clients. The clients paid big bucks for developers by the hour, but when it came to selling documentation to them, they were aghast. Why should they have to pay for instructions to use the product they were paying hundreds of thousands to have developed? And they had a point. We tried to turn documentation into a profit-center, and even in that environment, when they clients paid for *time,* not just *product,* it didn't work. I have mixed feelings about that, but my gut-level judgement is that when clients pay big bucks for a product, the documentation is an integral part of it, not an extra.
