For those who don't want to start completely from scratch, there's a
couple of free business plan Word templates in Microsoft's template
gallery:
It may not be as professional or helpful for the newbie as a business
plan writing package, but it's a decent place to start and does cover
most of the bases such as marketing and market analysis, financials,
company structure, planning, etc.
Tucows also has several business plan writing packages available to
try out - check the 'Office' section of any Tucows site.
I agree, a business plan is a *must* if you're looking to strike out
on your own. Not only will it keep you focused during all your
marketing, promotional and sales activities now, but is a great
reference document for whenever you decide to re-evaluate your
strategies. As a couple others have mentioned already, you'll need a
professional business plan if you intend to get any sort of bank loan
or financing. And it can be your best friend - and best piece of
evidence - should you ever be the subject of a tax audit due to your
claim of 'self-employment' status. :^)
