Eric wrote in response to Bruce's email (who responded to my post) about the TECHWR_L Poll Question:

I was wondering that too. I mean, it's been 9 years since I
did hardware docs--heavy machinery, FWIW--but I sure put in my
time on the factory floor in assembling and disassembling
the machinery. (I was uninvited by management, but welcome by the
line workers.) I also went out on the proving ground and
_used_ the stuff. As a product user, I was far more prepared to
develop useful docs.<<

Hey, it's great work if you can get it. In many situations, the design of the product doesn't occur in the same place as its manufacture (as is the case with my present employer). I don't have the luxury to wander down to the fab, slip into my bunny suit, and observe microprocessor manufacturing (though I DID do this when I worked as a contractor at SEMATECH).

My proving ground is the customer site, and it's rare--very rare--that someone from the technical communications team would be able to make such a visit. We do, however, work with validation customers who receive advance samples of products. They in turn provide us with detailed feedback about the accompanying user documentation. We also have a separate group dedicated to usability engineering and a usability lab for such purposes.

There's no question that having the luxury of access to mfg and customers makes for a better understanding of the product from a real-world perspective.
