At S&S, a manufacturer of medium tactical vehicles (or "Army trucks" to us
civilians), we had to perform almost every procedure or watch a mechanic do
it from the instructions. Then everything was run through again later with
actual military personnel before the DOD would sign off on it.

did hardware docs--heavy machinery, FWIW--but I sure put in my
time on the factory floor in assembling and disassembling
the machinery. (I was uninvited by management, but welcome by the
line workers.) I also went out on the proving ground and
_used_ the stuff.
