Hi Laura,

It's difficult to give a specific rate on this
list because it is rather international and the
rate in one country differs significantly from the
rate in another. Not only that, from what I have
gathered from past posts to the list, the rate
often differs from region to region within the US
itself. To get more accurate information, you
might want to be region-specific (how much in MA,
NY, CA, etc.).

However, one suggestion I would offer is not to
charge based on the type or magnitude of the
editing job. I believe this opens you up to
possible difficulties later. What you call major
rewriting, the client might feel is heavy editing.
Can you define the exact point where light editing
turns into average or heavy editing?

I charge the same rate for all writing/editing
work and explain that the difference is in the
amount of time it will take. If the document is in
good shape from the start (i.e. it only needs
light editing), the overall price for the job will
be less because it will take less time to
complete. A job needing major editing or even a
complete rewrite will therefore take longer and be
more expensive.

HTH,
Paula

Hi all!

Thanks for the recent discussion on pay per word
for freelance writing--it's been enlightening.
Quick question: What would be an advisable rate
for a TW working in a freelancing editing
capacity, editing existing text and making it more
understandable for end users?

Thanks and have a great weekend!
