I say I own a technical writing company. If I get the blank look, I say "You
know when you buy a product or software and it comes with a manual that is
no help at all? We do that." Invariably, I get a chuckle and then someone
asks if I can help them program their VCR or fix their computer problem.
True! ;-)

| To those who don't know what a technical writer is, I usually say I write
| manuals about computer stuff. "That must be interesting. Boy, it sure is
| hot today, huh?" [or cold or wet or windy or ...] Ottawa has a
significant
| high-tech population, so I don't encounter this situation very often.
|
| When I mention it to someone who *does* know what a TW is, I invariably
hear
| either, "Oh yeah, I've done some of that," or "Oh yeah, my
| girlfriend/wife/sister/neighbour/housesitter is a technical writer at
| Nortel/wants to be a technical writer at Nortel/married a technical
writer,
| I think he works at Nortel."
