Los Angeles was the greatest place I ever lived and I made more solid friendships there than any of the many other places I've been. There are phonies everywhere. California is an incredible state and I miss tech writing and my local STC chapter there.

BB (and list members):

I've already sent you a long e-mail off list. However, there were a couple
of things that, IMVHO, I thought would be helpful to put in the archives.
So, I repeat them here.

===Tech Whirler tie in===
Relocating to another state for a tech writer job can present many
challenges. It's good to examine one's values and lifestyle, then use the
list to chat (off list) with folks who live in the area in which you are
interested. Ask the hard questions of people and find out what living in the
community will *really* be like.

As a third-generation Californian, I'm so sorry you've experienced that
insincerity. I have, too, and I've also been guilty of that "let's do lunch"
behavior sometimes. Four years in Arizona ('94 to '98) helped me see how
people in other states behave, and I am so grateful. (AZ, I love you and
miss you!) Thanks for the reminder to be more human, more genuine.

===What can you do?===
If there are people you'd really like to have lunch with, be persistent.
Call, call, and call again and force them to set a firm date and time. If
the people are nice, and you'd like to get to know them better, don't give
up. In Southern California, people tend to get *very* busy and stress
themselves out. They limit their circle of friends to a small number.
Sometimes, they forget how wonderful it is to just sit at a local coffee
house and shoot the breeze for two hours. You may be the one to help them
slow down a bit. Blow off the "fake" ones who really don't care about
others, only about themselves. There are some really, really neat people in
this state (yes, even in Southern California). One has to work hard and dig
down deep to find them.

Pick your favorite charity, nonprofit, etc., and get involved. For example,
"even Californians" who are dedicated volunteers for the Special Olympics,
AIDS Walk, Salvation Army, or American Cancer Society (etc.) are genuine
people.

If you're near Orange County, I'll go to coffee with you! And, my local STC
chapter makes living here very worth while. (I love you guys, if you're on
this list!)

BB (and other TWs lonely in new locales), hang in there. I've learned we
have to take the initiative a lot. Dig deep and you'll find the genuine
people.

When I moved to California, people would say: call me,
or let's have lunch...not being from California I
believed them...Oh, the horrified looks and the silly
comments I got because I thought they were sincere.

Unless I know someone really well, I don't beleive
anyone...that's what living here has done!
