Hi, Rohini:

As another TW also certified in TESOL (U.S.: Teaching English to Speakers
of Other Languages), I once was a part of an international program at my
university. The TOEFL exam was very important to the students as it would
satisfy U.S. four-year university admission requirements for English
language skills.

In other words, if the student passes TOEFL, it's her ticket out of the
international program's extension courses and into regular university degree
programs.

When I was a student in Madrid, it meant a lot to me when the examiners said
I could attend some regular university courses. In everyone's mind, it meant
I had a sufficient enough grasp of the language to stay on top of the course
work like a native speaker.

=====So, what's my point?=========

Rohini: I believe that if you want to take the TOEFL, go for it. Especially
if you would feel a certain sense of accomplishment by passing it. Do it for
you, not for anyone else.

As far as tech writing, I just don't know it if would be considered as a
bonus. As a former international student and a former ESL professor, if I
were interviewing you for a job, I would definitely be impressed that you
passed your TOEFL. (Yes, I would ask you what was your score.) I would want
to see your portfolio samples. I would want to know how well you could
follow complex conversations during a project meeting. And, how well you
would interact with the SMEs. Plus, other questions I won't go into right
now because I have a 9:00 meeting.

If you'd like to chat more about this off list, feel free to buzz an e-mail
by me. I'd love to hear from you!
